Muscat: The Oman Triathlon Team will organise the 'Mini Qurm Island Swim' on May 6.
According to Suleiman Al Alawi of Oman Triathlon Team, the team planned the event to provide opportunity to those swimming enthusiasts who will not be included the field for forthcoming Fahal Island Swim due to the overwhelming response.
"The Fahal Island Swim is fully booked. Over 120 people are already in and with long waiting list. Seeing a big demand for sea swimming and for the benefit of those who are not able to do/join the Fahal Island Swim, Oman Triathlon Team is happy to announce the Mini Qurm Island Swim," he said.
The Mini Qurm Island Swim will be a 3km competition and is scheduled to take place off Qurm Beach, from Starbucks via Intercontinental Hotel to Crowne Plaza.
Giving the reasons for calling the race Mini Qurm Island Swim, he said: "The course will take the swimmers from Intercontinental to Crowne Plaza, and to a small rock in the sea in front of Starbucks. Hence the name Mini Qurm Island Swim."
The swim is scheduled to start at 7.00 a.m. after the registration and competition briefing at 6.30 am.
The entry fee is OMR 2, which according to the organisers is basically 'to cover the expenses towards the drinking water and the safety boat'.
The organisers also revealed that there will be just one safety boat that follow the slowest swimmer while asking the volunteers, especially those with kayaks, to support this 'unofficial' event.
