Muscat: The Ministry of Energy and Minerals on Tuesday organised a workshop titled "Roadmap for Integration Between Minerals, Fertiliser, and Chemicals in the Sultanate of Oman," under the patronage of Mohsen Hamad Al Hadrami, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals.
The workshop focused on developing an integrated roadmap linking the minerals sector with the fertiliser and associated chemicals industry. It reviewed existing and future projects and proposed opportunities, and identified stakeholders, roles, and the timelines required to advance priority projects towards implementation stages.
The roadmap is based on a study prepared by Falaj Point Company for the Ministry of Energy and Minerals to link mineral resources and concession areas with manufacturing industries, and to build an integrated framework connecting resources, manufacturing capabilities, infrastructure, logistics services, and markets, thereby enhancing the transition from exporting raw materials in their primary form to products that support local content and food manufacturing.
The study indicates the availability of a base of mineral and industrial resources that can be built upon to develop the fertiliser and related chemical products industry, including gypsum, limestone, dolomite, laterite, kaolin, and potash, alongside existing capabilities in the production of urea, ammonia, and sulphur. The roadmap also reviews opportunities for developing industrial clusters in Sohar, Duqm, Salalah, and Ibri, in accordance with the resources, capabilities, and infrastructure available at each site, thereby enhancing integration between raw materials, manufacturing, logistics services, and markets.
The workshop featured interactive sessions addressing the reality of the minerals sector and its inputs into the fertiliser industry, existing industrial capabilities, and the role of sulphur and associated chemicals. It also discussed proposed investment projects and opportunities and identified priorities and implementation steps in cooperation with the relevant authorities.
The roadmap contributes to supporting the Sultanate of Oman's approaches towards maximising the economic value of natural resources, localising industries, developing local content, attracting investments, expanding the base of manufacturing industries, and diversifying sources of income, in line with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040.
The workshop was attended by a number of chief executive officers of companies operating in the minerals and fertiliser sectors, along with several government entities, investors, and stakeholders.
