Muscat: Oman has introduced a new urban planning law aimed at strengthening sustainable development, improving urban quality and supporting long-term national growth objectives as the Sultanate continues efforts to modernise its planning framework in line with future economic and environmental priorities.
Issued under Royal Decree No. 58/2026, the law establishes new mechanisms and planning tools to regulate urban development in accordance with sustainability principles and public interest considerations, while maintaining balance between economic, social and environmental priorities.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning said the legislation provides a comprehensive legal framework supporting Oman Vision 2040 by enhancing infrastructure efficiency, strengthening transport networks and promoting equitable distribution of public services and facilities across various governorates.
The law also aims to encourage investment and economic growth through clearer and more sustainable urban planning regulations, while reducing the impact of environmental and natural risks on urban areas.
Officials said the new legislation marks a significant step in the evolution of urban planning in Oman, reinforcing sustainable development principles and contributing to the creation of a more balanced, resilient and higher-quality urban environment for future generations.
