Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman will join nations around the world tomorrow in celebrating World Metrology Day, observed annually on 20 May. The commemoration highlights the essential role of measurement in all aspects of daily life, as well as in economic and scientific domains.
This year’s celebration is held under the theme “Measurements: Building Trust in Decision-Making,” underscoring that accurate measurement serves as the foundation for public policy, reinforces fairness in trade, ensures the quality of services, and protects both the environment and society.
The theme for this year reflects the fundamental reality that governmental, economic, and scientific decisions can only be deemed reliable when based on precise data and validated standards. Trust among institutions and society, as well as between nations and their trading partners, is built upon sound measurement—which eliminates ambiguity and promotes transparency.
The signing of the Metre Convention in 1875 marked a pivotal moment for international cooperation in metrology, establishing a unified global system, namely the International System of Units (SI).
The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion projects that by 2030, metrology-related activities will contribute 0.01 percent to the national GDP as part of the standardization sector. Furthermore, metrology is expected to account for 64.8 percent of the total projected revenue within the standardization sector by 2030. In addition, the field is anticipated to generate promising employment opportunities over the next five years, requiring specialized technical skills and competencies in metrological verification, calibration, quality assurance, and research and development.
