Muscat: Oman Sail and Asyad Shipping launched the Diveability Programme to support persons with disabilities.
The programme offers weekly sessions guiding participants from beginner level through to Open Water certification, aiming to enhance the physical and social well-being of persons with disabilities through underwater activity.
Thirty candidates will have the opportunity to experience diving in a swimming pool, allowing them to engage with the sport in a safe environment and decide whether to progress further. Of these, 15 will advance to an open water experience at the Daymaniyat Islands, While, five participants will continue to complete the Open Water course, including an additional 15 dives. By the end of the programme, they will obtain an internationally-recognised PADI certification, enabling them to dive alongside others independently.
The programme will initially be delivered by PADI-qualified instructors from SeaOman at the Al Amal Club swimming pool before shifting to Oman Sail’s Al Mouj Sailing School for open water activities.
Laila Ali Ambusaidi, Acting Senior Sponsorship Sales at Oman Sail, said, “Water sports, including swimming, diving and sailing, have been shown to have a positive impact on the lives of persons with disabilities. We have seen the benefits firsthand, and by continuing the Diveability Programme with the support of Asyad Shipping we are delighted to support more people to enjoy the water, learn new skills and build the capacity for a future career as an instructor.”
Abdulnasser Salim Al Sinani, Diveability Coach, added, “Diveability has the potential to transform lives across the country by introducing people with disabilities to an activity they can do safely by providing an experience free of the limitations they live with on land. Activities in the water can also provide therapeutic benefits for those recovering from injury or trauma, as well as supporting physical exercise. We are excited to deliver another edition of the Diveability Programme and continue empowering people with disabilities to fulfil their potential.”
