Net electricity generation in Oman increases by 15.6%

Muscat: Preliminary data issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) revealed a significant acceleration in the growth of the electricity sector in the Sultanate of Oman by the end of March 2026. Total generation jumped by 16 percent to reach 10,544.0 gigawatt-hours (GWh), compared to 9,091.4 GWh during the same period in 2025.

Meanwhile, the water sector recorded a decline of 2.8 percent, with production reaching 118,412.6 million cubic metres.

Net electricity generation—which includes purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) and the Rural Areas Electricity Company—increased by 15.6 percent to reach 10,216.1 GWh, compared to 8,840.5 GWh in the corresponding period of the previous year. This indicator reflects genuine growth in demand and consumption.

Water statistics showed a 2.8 percent decrease, with Muscat Governorate recording the largest decline at 5.2 percent as production fell from 48,787.4 million cubic meters at the end of March 2025 to 46,259.0 million cubic metres at the end of March 2026.

Electricity generation in the remaining governorates also decreased by 2.4 percent to reach 53,206.1 million cubic metres. Conversely, water production in Dhofar Governorate grew by 2.5 percent, reaching 18,947.5 million cubic metres compared to 18,492.1 million cubic metres during the same period of 2025. This performance reflects infrastructure improvements or an increase in seasonal or early demand.
