Chairman of Shura Council leads Oman’s delegation at IPU meeting

Muscat: Khalid Hilal Al Maawali, Chairman of the Shura Council, is leading the Sultanate of Oman’s delegation at the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Istanbul, Republic of Turkey, from April 14 to 19.

The participation comes in response to an official invitation extended by the President of the IPU.

The agenda includes a number of items and parallel meetings, in addition to the general debate under the theme: “Harnessing hope, advancing peace, and delivering justice for future generations.”

The Shura Council delegation is scheduled to take part in coordination meetings of the Arab Parliamentary Group, the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, and the Union of Councils of the Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

It will also participate in joint meetings with the heads of geopolitical groups, standing committees, and other specialised IPU bodies, as well as meetings of the Parliamentary Group in Support of Palestine and the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement.

These coordination meetings aim to enhance cooperation and align unified Gulf and Arab parliamentary positions, particularly regarding the emergency item included on the IPU Assembly’s agenda, reflecting a shared commitment to supporting issues of common interest to Gulf, Arab, and Islamic legislative councils.

The delegation will further participate in the 217th session of the IPU Governing Council, the Assembly sessions, the Forum of Young Parliamentarians, and other accompanying meetings.

Meanwhile, Ahmed Mohammed Al Nadabi, Secretary-General of the Shura Council, will take part in the meetings of the Association of Secretaries General of National Parliaments.

Members of the delegation will also attend meetings of the IPU’s standing committees, namely the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development, the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security, and the Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs.

Discussions will cover several topics, including “Building a fair and sustainable global economy: the role of parliaments in combating protectionism, reducing tariffs, and preventing corporate tax evasion,” and “The role of parliaments in establishing effective mechanisms for post-conflict governance and restoring just and lasting peace.”

The delegation includes Ahmed Mohammed Al Nadabi, Secretary-General of the Shura Council, along with Their Excellencies Dr. Ahmed Ali Al Saadi, Ahmed Bakhit Al Juhfali, Hamdan Ali Al Manai, and Mohammed Ali Al Balushi, members of the Shura Council.

It is worth noting that the Inter-Parliamentary Union comprises more than 179 parliaments, in addition to 65 associate members representing international institutions and civil society organisations.

The IPU works to promote peace, democracy, human rights, gender equality, youth empowerment, and sustainable development through political dialogue, cooperation, and parliamentary action, as well as enhancing women’s participation in parliament and strengthening their role in policymaking.
