Oman’s embassy warns citizens over travel to this Indian state

Muscat: Oman’s Embassy in New Delhi has warned its citizens not to travel to the Indian state of Kerala due to the spread of the Nipah virus, except in cases of urgent need.
The Omani embassy in India said in a statement online, “Due to the spread of the Nipah virus in the southern Indian state of Kerala, the Embassy in New Delhi calls on citizens not to travel there except in the most necessary cases, and to take care and avoid crowds, and the consumption of fruits and vegetables.”
According to World Health Organisation: “Nipah virus (NiV) infection is a newly emerging zoonosis that causes severe illness in both animals and humans. The natural host of the virus is the fruit bat of the Pteropodidae Family, Pteropus genus.”
NiV infection in humans has a range of outbreaks, from asymptomatic infection to acute respiratory syndrome and fatal encephalitis. NiV is also capable of causing disease in pigs and other domestic animals. There is no vaccine for either humans or animals, with primary treatment for human cases being intensive supportive care.
