Muscat: Two new linear accelerators were installed at the National Oncology Centre in the Royal Hospital under the patronage of H.H. Dr Adham bin Turki bin Mahmood AL-Said in the presence of H.E. Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Saidi, Minister of Health.
The new accelerators, TrueBeam, combine three techniques: 2D, 3D imaging and x-ray cross-sections in addition to monitoring tumours during treatment. The devices come equipped with a six-axis robotic bed and can take four-dimensional CT scans, which are used to locate tumours while monitoring breathing.
These accelerators are one of the most advanced in the world and will reduce the duration of the process. The procedure that usually takes 10 to 30 minutes will now get done in less than two minutes. This will immensely help patients and will also increase the capacity of the Centre.
Dr Al Saidi pointed out that these devices are a qualitative addition to the National Oncology Centre. He added that the Sultanate is on par with other advanced countries when it comes to techniques in radiotherapy.
The devices will bring new techniques to the Centre such as the SRS, SBRT, IGRT and RapidArc apart from the existing therapeutic techniques.
