500 expats arrested, 457 deported for violating labour law in Oman

Muscat: More than 500 expatriates were arrested in the first week of 2017 for violating the labour law in Oman, according to the Ministry of Manpower.
Of the 557 arrested workers, 430 were commercial, 74 agricultural and 53 domestic workers.
Four of the illegal workers were undocumented while 305 were found to be absconded and 214 were fired from their jobs.
Muscat recorded the highest number of violators with 191 being arrested, followed by North Al Batinah governorate with 161 labourers.
All were caught between January 1st and 7th.
The ministry stated that 457 illegal workers have been deported for violating the Sultanate’s laws.
