SQU launches 'Our Values, Our Digital Identity' campaign

Muscat: Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) organised on Wednesday the launch forum of the awareness campaign "Our Values, Our Digital Identity".

The event was held under the auspices of HH Sayyid Dr. Fahad Al Julanda Al Said, Vice-Chancellor of the University.

The campaign aims to enhance Omani values and identity in the digital environment, promote a culture of digital citizenship, raise awareness about the safe and responsible use of technology, and protect privacy and digital identity, alongside raising awareness about the dangers of cyberbullying, extortion, and harmful content, and developing critical thinking in dealing with digital news and information.

Sheikh Ahmed Ali Al Shehhi, Wali of A’Seeb, affirmed that launching the campaign comes in response to the challenges posed by rapid digital transformations, pointing out that building a conscious personality and enhancing digital citizenship is a joint responsibility among the family, school, university, and cultural, media, and community institutions.

Dr. Wafa Said Al Maamari, Associate Professor and Head of the Sociology and Social Work Department at the university, explained the importance of reinforcing values and ethics among students to safeguard their psychological and intellectual security, and preserve cultural identity as well as religious and national values, emphasising the importance of building a generation guided by knowledge, protected by values, and capable of distinguishing between beneficial and harmful content in the digital world.

The campaign is based on a set of values, including belonging, safety, credibility, respect, responsibility, dialogue, and balance, emphasizing that digital citizenship transcends the proper use of technology to making an individual's presence in the digital world an extension of their values, identity, and responsible behavior in society.

The campaign will run for six months and will initially be implemented in four schools, targeting 500 male and female students and 140 parents through awareness, interactive, school, and community activities.

The campaign comes in partnership between the university, represented by the Department of Sociology and Social Work at the College of Arts and Social Sciences, the Parents' Council in the Wilayat of A’Seeb, and the Cultural Citizenship Salon, with the participation of relevant authorities and institutions concerned with values, identity, upbringing, and digital citizenship.
