Muscat: Oman Cancer Association today held a press conference during which it outlined details of the 22nd annual walkathon aimed to support cancer patients.
The walkathon, which takes the slogan "Walk with Hope", is scheduled to be held on 29 and 30 October 2026 at Qurum Natural Park, as part of the programme of “October Breast Cancer Awareness Month”.
The walkathon constitutes one of the most prominent annual community events to raise public awareness about cancer. It lends support to patients and their families in a manner that alleviates the burdens associated with the disease, in addition to underlining the importance of early detection of the disease and means of protection against its development.
Dr. Waheed bin Ali Al Kharousi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Oman Cancer Association, said in a statement during the press conference that “the cancer walkathon gains significance due to the fact that it represents a stand by cancer patients, survivors and their families”. The walk also stresses the importance of the prevention of cancer, the early detection of the disease and the need to adopt healthy lifestyles, he explained.
Dr. Waheed pointed out that the cancer walk’s programme will begin with an open day that includes educational events, early detection services offered to breast cancer patients, measuring of blood pressure and checking blood sugar levels. The second day includes a symbolic walk of less than two kilometres, he added.
For his part, Dr. Talal bin Mohammed Al Balushi, member of the Board of Directors of Oman Cancer Association, said that the previous edition of the cancer walkathon saw participation of more than 8,000 people. He pointed out that public engagement in the event, in different parts of the Sultanate of Oman, reflects the community’s growing interest in cancer awareness and initiatives of prevention of the disease.
