Oman participates in memorial ceremony for climbers who died on Broad Peak

New York: The Sultanate of Oman participated in a memorial ceremony held by the Consulate General of Nepal in New York to honor mountaineers who lost their lives while climbing Broad Peak in Pakistan.

Speaking at the ceremony, Oman’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Omar bin Said Al Kathiri, expressed Oman’s appreciation to Nepal for organizing the humanitarian event, which reflected the values of friendship and solidarity. He also thanked Pakistan for its cooperation and the efforts of its authorities and search-and-rescue teams in recovering and transporting the victims under extremely difficult conditions.

Ambassador Al Kathiri paid tribute to the late Omani climber Nadhira  Al Harthy, describing her as a symbol of determination and ambition. Al Harthy became the first Omani woman to summit Mount Everest in 2019 and the first Arab woman to climb Ama Dablam in Nepal.

She also climbed several other major peaks and contributed to strengthening ties between Oman and Nepal through her leadership of the Omani-Nepalese Friendship Association and her role as a Goodwill Ambassador for the Muscat Free Walking Team.

The ambassador also remembered all the climbers who lost their lives, highlighting how their passion for mountaineering reflected values of mutual respect, trust and cooperation among peoples, and extended condolences to their families and loved ones.
