Colombo: Five people have died and three others were injured on Tuesday following heavy rainfall that triggered flooding and landslides across Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lanka Disaster Management Centre reported that the rains and floods damaged 129 homes, prompting authorities to evacuate approximately 2,000 people from affected areas.
Sri Lankan authorities have deployed army and navy personnel to assist in rescue operations, aid those trapped by floodwaters, and transport them to safer locations. Several schools in the mountainous regions have also been closed.
The heavy rains that struck Sri Lanka caused widespread damage across multiple areas, submerging homes, farmlands, and roadways, with the highland regions bearing the brunt of the severe weather conditions.
