Eight killed in heavy rains in India's Kerala state

New Delhi--- At least eight people have lost their lives and 13 others have been injured in the Indian state of Kerala, following heavy rains that triggered landslides, flooding, and widespread property damage.

Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan stated in a release today that 27 homes have been completely destroyed and 196 others partially damaged, with 5,792 people relocated to 209 relief camps across the state, according to India's Press Trust of India news agency.

He added that the government would ensure assistance is provided to the families of the victims and to those who have lost their homes and livelihoods.
