Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman will join the world in observing Medical Laboratory Day tomorrow, 15 April 2026.
The event lays emphasis on the significant role of laboratories in consolidating the modern health system.
It also promotes recognition for the specialty of medical laboratory as a major contributor to the health of individuals and society.
Dr. Hanan Salim Al Kindi, Director of the Department of the Central Public Health Laboratory (Ministry of Health), told the Oman News Agency (ONA) that the Central Public Health Laboratory, opened in January 2026, represents a strategic achievement that reflects the Sultanate of Oman’s commitment to enhancing the health security system and improving the quality of health services.
The laboratory, she added, constitutes a cornerstone in supporting epidemiological surveillance and early warning systems by providing advanced capabilities for the rapid and accurate detection of infectious diseases and emerging health threats, including epidemics of global dimension.
Dr. Hanan added that the Central Public Health Laboratory is a national and regional reference that boasts the latest laboratory technologies and international standards.
She pointed out that the Central Public Health Laboratory contributes to standardising procedures and enhancing integration among relevant health institutions in the Sultanate of Oman.
She added that the Central Public Health Laboratory provides an advanced platform for scientific research and innovation and supports epidemiological studies that contribute to formulating evidence-based health policies.
The Central Public Health Laboratory focuses on grooming national cadres through continuous training of health personnel and by boosting partnerships with similar international centres and the World Health Organization.
The Central Public Health Laboratory is considered a long-term investment in community health and the sustainability of the health system, said Dr. Hanan, who stressed the Sultanate of Oman’s readiness to deal with health emergencies and its keenness in maintaining its status as an outstanding regional hub in the field of public health.
For her part, Dalal Khamis Al Yahya’ee, a medical laboratory technician at the Central Public Health Laboratory, told ONA that medical laboratories serve as the cornerstone of healthcare, being the department that provides accurate data for the early diagnosis and monitoring the biometric health environment.
“Medical laboratories are considered the eye through which a doctor sees what cannot be observed clinically. Physicians rely heavily on laboratory results. The majority of medical decisions are based on lab analyses, notably in the diagnosis of chronic diseases, infectious diseases and blood diseases,” said Dalal Al Yahya’ee.
She pointed out that global COVID-19 pandemic (coronavirus pandemic) left a deep impact on laboratory workers, urging them to stay alert on a constant basis and consolidating their sense of responsibility and commitment towards the homeland. She also underscored the role of rapid technological transformations, including artificial intelligence (AI).
She noted that these transformations have had a positive impact on the work of medical laboratories, making their process faster and more accurate, minimising human errors and helping analyse a large number of samples in record time.
