Sohar: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources is organizing the 2026 Food Safety Week, which kicked off today in the Wilayat of Sohar, Governorate of North Al Batinah.

The opening ceremony of the 6-day event was held under the auspices of Dr. Saud Hamoud Al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, and attended by representatives of government departments and private sector establishments.

Represented by the Food Safety and Quality Centre, the Ministry is organizing the week's activities under the theme "Food safety is the responsibility of all", said Dr. Intisar Salim Al Ghraibi, Director General of the Food Safety and Quality Centre. She added that the event is in pursuance of national efforts to boost the food safety system and to raise public awareness.

Dr. Intisar pointed out that the Food Safety Week's activities include a food safety forum (which brings together specialists from relevant sectors, who will exchange expertise and discuss ways to enhance partnerships), a food safety marathon in the Wilayat of Sohar and the launch of a magazine aimed to enhance food safety concepts among different segments of society.

The inaugural ceremony included a lecture titled "Food safety system in numbers", which outlined national efforts in this field and the opening of an exhibition featuring special initiatives and awareness programmes, with the participation of a number of food production companies.

Food Safety Week 2026 also includes specialized workshops, competitions and field visits to food production establishments, in addition to awareness programmes targeting the students of schools and universities.
