Muscat: Oman went down fighting to fancied Saudi Arabia 2-1 in their opening Group B match of the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 at the Education City stadium in Doha on Tuesday night.
After both the teams remained goalless at interval, the second session saw both the teams going all out.
The Green Falcons came out flying in the second half, pressing high and piling on the pressure. A brilliant cross into the box found Feras Al Brikan, who rose and struck a powerful header into the back of the net to give the Saudis a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute.
Oman, coached by Carlos Queiroz, fought hard and got the equaliser in the 70th minute with a brilliant finish from Ghanim Al Habsi.
Oman's joy was shortlived as Saudi Arabia went ahead again seven minutes later through Saleh Al Shehri, the goal turning out to be decisive as Oman failed to find the equaliser despite valiant attempts.
Earlier in the same group, Morocco recorded a 3-1 victory over Comoros, in the match held at Khalifa International Stadium on Tuesday evening.
