Falaj rehabilitation and improvement project in Sur completed

Sur: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has completed and received from the company carrying out the project works, the project on rehabilitation and development of Falaj Al Jeela in the Wilayat of Sur, South Al Sharqiyah Governorate.

The falaj is one of the five falajs registered in the Unesco list of international heritage.

The maintenance works of the falaj, located at Al Jeela village in the wilayat of Sur included the renovation of the water collection area, the open  150-metre  channel of the falaj and the renovation of some broken parts of the falaj among other works. 

Salah Salim Al Mahjari, Head of Dams, Aflaj and Protection Walls Division  at the Department of Water Resources at the Directorate General of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate  said that the aflaj (falajs) in Oman represent a historic , cultural and humanitarian heritage rather than just sources of water.

They represent an integrated system that contributed to stability of societies, he added.

Falaj Al Jeela is an eye falaj located at a mountainous area at Al Jeela Village in the Wilayat of Sur, South Al Sharqiyah Governorate.

The length of the open channel of the falaj is 415 metres. The falaj water comes from the upper course of Wadi Al Shaab.
