Muscat residents share earthquake experiences

Muscat: A mild tremor hit Muscat on Sunday afternoon, sending a wave of panic among the people living in places in Wadi Kabir, Ruwi and Darsait.

An earthquake, measuring 2.5 on the Richter scale, was recorded in Muscat, at 2.43 pm today, according to the Sultan Qaboos University Earthquake Monitoring Centre.

The quake’s epicentre was located approximately 3 km south of Muscat city, the Monitoring Centre said.

Residents of Muscat all of a sudden started experiencing a minor tremor, as household items began shaking noticeably.

Many people, alarmed by the sudden movement, also came out of their homes. "It was all shaking for a few seconds," a Ruwi resident said.

Residents of Ruwi also reported feeling the tremor, confirming the unsettling event. “Yes I felt it. I was taking a rest at my home near the Ruwi Stock Exchange when all of a sudden I realized my bed was shaking. Lying in the bed, I thought it was a dream. Next to my flat, there is a repair and maintenance happening for the last two days. Then I come out of the home, thinking to tell them are you going to damage the building by drilling so hard, as my bed was also shaking,” Lijo M George, who is working in a private company in Oman, said.

Suddenly Lijo checked social media, then some of the friends updated him about the earthquake. “Thanks I noticed my mobile, otherwise I would have gone angry with my good neighbor,” he said.

Another resident, Sarfaraz Dawood Bagdadi, said that he felt two tremors. “I felt two tremors in Wadi Kabir near Indian KG school – one was nearly four to five second and next again after two minutes I felt for a second,” he said.

Another resident, Aswathi Mithun, said three of our colleagues felt tremors three times yesterday afternoon. “The first was at 2:44 pm, the second was at 2:52 pm and the 3rd at 3pm,” the Wadi Kabir resident claimed.

Another resident who lives in Rex Road, said that she felt the tremor while she was working. "I was watching television at that time and jumped up from my chair thinking it might get severe," she said. The jolts, however, faded away within a few seconds, she added.
