Muscat: Qatar, nestled in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula, has long captivated travellers with its seamless blend of rich history and modern luxury.
Having been invited by Visit Qatar to experience the country, I embarked on a four-day journey to explore its captivating culture, world-class attractions, and exceptional hospitality.
From my arrival with Qatar Airways -renowned for its top-tier service - to every memorable moment that followed, Qatar proved to be a place that invites visitors to discover more at every turn.
A rich tapestry of history and culture
Qatar’s history is deeply influenced by its geographical position along historic trade routes, fostering a vibrant exchange of cultures. Two major groups, the nomadic Bedouins and the settled Hadar communities, shaped its unique social fabric. The Bedouins’ oral traditions and the Hadar’s coastal pearl diving legacy echo through the country’s cultural ethos. Traditional Qatari culture is celebrated through its music, dance, and handicrafts.
Arrival and first impressions
Qatar Airways, widely regarded as one of the world’s leading airlines, made my journey as smooth and luxurious as possible. The flight was comfortable, the service impeccable, and every detail thoughtfully curated to ensure my short trip started on the right note. Once I arrived in Doha, the capital city of Qatar, I was immediately struck by the fusion of modernity and tradition that defines this remarkable destination.
My journey coincided with Qatar’s National Day on December 18, adding a special flair to my visit. From staying at the exquisite Hotel The Ned to exploring its landmarks, every moment was filled with surprises and new insights.
My first stop was the Katara Cultural Village, a hub of artistic expression and cultural celebration. The stunning space combines classical design elements with a contemporary touch, offering everything from open-air performances at the amphitheatre to exhibitions showcasing the best of Qatari and international art.
I wandered through its galleries, experiencing the diversity of cultural influences that have shaped this nation. Katara is where tradition and modernity meet, and it was a fitting introduction to what Qatar had to offer.
Later, the streets were alive with National Day festivities. As the entire nation celebrated, I witnessed the pride and joy of the Qatari people - an unforgettable experience that highlighted the country’s unity and spirit.
Discovering Souq Waqif
The next day, I made my way to the bustling Souq Waqif, one of Qatar’s most vibrant landmarks with the local tour guide, Buthaina Iraqi. This traditional market, with its maze of narrow alleys and winding pathways, instantly transports you back in time. The scent of spices fills the air, and the sight of intricate handicrafts, colourful fabrics, and gleaming jewellery is a feast for the senses.
A visit to Souq Waqif feels like a journey through history, with each stall telling a unique story of Qatari culture and heritage.
I had the pleasure of enjoying breakfast at Shay Al Shomous, a beloved restaurant that has become a cultural landmark in its own right.
Opened by Qatar’s first female entrepreneur, it’s a place that has welcomed prominent personalities from around the world and a symbol of women empowerment. The food was nothing short of exceptional, with local delicacies that provided a true taste of Qatari hospitality. The setting was equally inviting, a perfect blend of traditional charm and comfort.
Next, I visited Darb Al Saai, a family-oriented festival venue that was alive with the spirit of Qatar’s National Day celebrations. The vibrant space hosted a variety of activities for families, showcasing the nation’s traditions, arts, and crafts. It was a wonderful opportunity to experience the warmth of Qatari culture firsthand and witness the pride the people of Qatar take in their heritage.
I witnessed the Ardha dance, where men and children brandished swords in rhythmic movements, and admired the intricate patterns of Al Sadu weaving, a traditional craft.
Modern marvels and cultural immersion
On the third day, I ventured into the heart of Qatar’s commitment to sustainability with a visit to Msheireb Downtown Doha. The innovative district is a model for urban sustainability, blending modern architecture with traditional Qatari design.
The eco-friendly buildings and urban planning showcased Qatar’s commitment to a sustainable future while still preserving its cultural heritage. The Msheireb Museums, housed in beautifully restored heritage buildings, offered a fascinating glimpse into Qatar’s transformation from a humble pearling economy to a modern global hub.
Later, I visited the National Museum of Qatar, an architectural masterpiece designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel. Inspired by the desert rose, the museum’s design is as breathtaking as the exhibits within. The museum takes visitors on a journey through Qatar’s history, from its Bedouin roots to its present-day status as a global leader in innovation and culture. After exploring the museum, I enjoyed a delightful lunch at Jiwan, a restaurant located within the museum, where the food was as impressive as the views of Doha’s skyline.
In the afternoon, I headed to Lusail City, a futuristic development that epitomises Qatar’s ambitions for the future. The city’s sleek skyscrapers, including the iconic Lusail Stadium, host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup final, offer a glimpse into a world where innovation and design come together. I marvelled at the sprawling marina, the cutting-edge architecture, and the bustling atmosphere that defined this new city at the forefront of modern urban development.
Dinner at LPM on Al Maha Island was the perfect end to an exciting day. The exclusive venue offers a luxurious dining experience, with world-class cuisine and stunning views of the island’s pristine beaches. The intimate setting made for a truly memorable evening, one that showcased Qatar’s growing reputation as a luxury destination.
The final day: A taste of Qatar’s heritage
My last day in Qatar began with a visit to the Mina District, home to some of Doha’s finest seafood restaurants. I had the pleasure of dining at one of the most popular spots, where the lines of eager diners were a testament to the restaurant’s popularity. The fresh, flavourful fish dishes were the perfect conclusion to my culinary journey in Qatar.
I wrapped up my trip with a visit to Ras Abrouq stunning desert resort located on the edge of the Al-Reem Biosphere Reserve. This eco-conscious retreat offered a chance to relax and reflect on the beauty of Qatar’s natural landscapes, from its vast sand dunes to its tranquil waters. The resort’s sustainable design perfectly complemented the natural environment, creating a luxurious yet environmentally conscious getaway.
The raw, untouched landscape provided a perfect contrast to the bustling city, offering a tranquil escape and a chance to reflect on the beauty of Qatar’s natural wonders.

From its bustling markets and cultural villages to its innovative museums and stunning landscapes, Qatar offers a diverse range of experiences for every type of traveller. The country’s commitment to blending tradition with modernity is evident in every corner of its capital, from the historic Souq Waqif to the sleek skyscrapers of Lusail City. Qatar is a destination that welcomes visitors with open arms, offering a seamless fusion of cultural richness, innovation, and world-class hospitality.
As my journey came to an end, I couldn’t help but reflect on the warmth and hospitality that had defined my entire visit. Qatar has firmly established itself as a leading global destination, and with its continued investment in tourism, sports events and infrastructure, it promises even more unforgettable experiences in the future. I left Qatar with memories that will last a lifetime and a deep appreciation for this welcoming country.
