Masirah players shine at national U17 badminton meet

Muscat: The talented athletes from Masirah stole the show at the National U-17 Badminton Championship, securing the top three awards in a stellar display of skill. Shihab al Hinai emerged victorious in the final, overcoming his teammate Ziyad al Hinai in a thrilling 2-1 match (20-22, 21-18, 21-16). Al Haitham al Hinai from Masirah and Abdulaziz al Hinai from Quriyat were jointly awarded third place as the playoff match was not conducted.

Representatives from the Ash Sharqiyah South-based team excelled throughout the one-day event, concluding their participation on a high note. The championship, organized by the Oman Racket Sports Committee (ORSC), featured seven clubs: Masirah, Oman Club, Saham, Quriyat, Sur, Bausher, and Salalah. Held at the Oasis Badminton Academy in Ghala, the junior tournament took place on Friday, coinciding with World Badminton Day on July 5.

Shihab al Hinai earned his place in the final after defeating Al Haitham al Hinai 2-0 (21-14, 21-19) in the semifinals and Abdullah Taher al Barawani 2-0 (21-11, 21-3) in the quarterfinals.

Dr. Abdulrahim bin Musallam al Droushi, Chairman of ORSC, praised the Masirah youth players for their exceptional performance. “Congratulations to Masirah Club for their impressive display in this youth badminton championship, as well as to the Qurayat player who shared third place. Recently, Masirah also clinched the title at the 2024 Oman Squash Club Championship, highlighting their dedication to racket sports. We commend their hard work,” he said.

"Hosting the junior Badminton Championship aligned with World Badminton Day. Additionally, ORSC organised various events and activities across Oman. The 'Shuttlecock in Parks, Gardens, and Beaches' initiative launched in April continued its activities in Ibra and Salalah on Friday as part of the World Badminton Day celebrations," he added.
