Muscat: There were 7,017 teaching staff in higher education institutions in the Sultanate, according to the Statistics Department at the Higher Education Admission Centre (HEAC) figures for the academic year 2014/2015.
This works out to 47.3 per cent of the total number of workers in these institutions.
Teaching staff accounted for 48.3 per cent of total employees in the government educational institutions and 45.7 per cent in the private higher educational institutions.
The figures indicated that the percentage of Omani teaching staff in the private and public higher education institutions was less than expatriates, who accounted for (27.4 per cent) in the government higher education institutions and (19.9 per cent) in the private higher education institutions of the total teaching staff.
Indians topped the list, with 48.2 per cent of the total of teaching staff, followed by Filipinos with 10.3 per cent, Egyptians with 5.8 per cent, Pakistanis with 4.4 per cent, and Tunisians nationality with 3.7 per cent.
With regard to the nationalities of the non-Omani teaching staff at the private higher education institutions, again the Indians topped the list with 41.1 per cent, followed by Pakistanis with 7.1 per cent, Iraqis and Egyptians and British.
Masters degree was the most common qualification among teaching staff at the higher education institutions during the academic year (2014-2015).
In the government institutions, they were accounted for 56.6 per cent and 50.2 per cent in private institutions of the total number.
The PhD holders among the teaching staff of the private higher education institutions are 2.1 per cent higher than those in the government institutions.
