Muscat: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources is conducting a survey project for exploring the fisheries resources in the Arabian Sea and the Sea of Oman.

The survey comes within the efforts of the ministry on utilising the fishery in a more sustainable way during the upcoming period.

The project aimed to provide details on the fish biomass in Oman’s seas and to provide estimates on the masses, seasonal distribution and availability of species of fish.

It also aimed to provide the environmental and physical information that could contribute to understanding the biodiversity and environmental diversity at the Arabian Sea and the Sea of Oman.

Dr. Dawood bin Sulaiman Al Yahyaei, Director General of fisheries research at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, said that this national project is vital for preserving sustainability of sea resources and for provision of the information required for setting the plans of optimal and sustainable utilisation and for setting up the policies necessary for preserving sea resources.

He said that the project of the survey and exploration of the fisheries resources in the Arabian Sea and the Sea of Oman contributes to enhancement of food security and to identify the seasons for banning fishing. -With ONA inputs
