Muscat: Work continues on the beach erosion protection project in Crown and Salan regions of the Wilayate of Sohar. The project is in its second phase.
The Municipality of North Al Batinah, represented by the Department of Transportation, continues to implement the beach erosion protection project, the second phase, in the Karwan and Salan regions in the Wilayat of Sohar, at a cost of OMR 45,000.
The protection work has been completed from the fish market to the end of the houses that were affected by the sea waves earlier in 2022. Also the work has been done to rehabilitate the dirt road leading to the houses from the beach side after it was completely impassable due to the impact of waves.
The road has also been paved with a width of not less than 10 meters, with barriers made of rocks from the sea side to ensure that the impact of waves on houses is reduced.
Engineer Omar bin Saeed Al Dhahli, the supervisor of the project, explained that the Transportation Department of Sohar Municipality had previously started implementing the project in its first phase, with a length of 500 meters and a period of 100 working days for the Crown and Salan regions by the Department of Transportation in the Municipality of North Al Batinah.
The number of backfills has reached 200 shipments, with a height of 4 meters from the surface of the earth, a depth of 2 meters, and a width of 3.7 meters.
The space between the barrier and the housing area is 18 meters. The municipality hopes that the project will contribute in reducing the impact of these sites from the phenomenon of erosion and protecting the homes and properties of citizens.
Engineer Omar Al-Dhuhli added that these efforts come within the framework of the initiatives previously presented by the Sohar Municipality Department. The pieces of limestone rocks of large sizes are lined up on sites affected by beach erosion. By studying the situation and trying to find solutions. The treatment needs in-depth studies by specialists in beach erosion, and what the municipality has done with its own efforts during the last period of treatment is not the final treatment for this phenomenon.
Such erosion treatment requires a breakwater with accurate technical specifications in order to have positive effects in the future.
The municipality is trying to find a temporary solution to this phenomenon, which in turn reduces the damage of beach erosion and the organization of the general landscape. The solution should also be compatible with the marine environment.
