We Love Oman: Nizwa’s unique water distribution system

Falaj Daris and Falaj Al Khatmayn are two popular falajs in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate and they are also on the UN World Heritage List. While Falaj Daris is considered one of the largest falaj in Oman that helps in irrigation of many farms in Nizwa, Falaj Al Khatmayn is a 2,450 metre-long falaj that is located in Barkat Al Mouz, Nizwa, and is famous for having a unique water distribution system and continuity of flow throughout the year. Falaj Daris stretches out to about 7,990 metres and  is known to cover large green areas, especially during the rains.

According to Oman’s Ministry of Tourism, “Falaj Daris is a Dawoodi Falaj and it consists of two branches: The “Big Branch” running for a length of 1,700 metres, and the “Small Branch” with a length of 1,900 metres. Falaj Daris stems from Wadi Al Abyad (White Valley).”  People living here depend on Falaj Daris to water their crops that extend from Shariat Al Falaj in Daris to the market area.
