Breakwaters rehabilitation project completed in Tiwi, South Al Sharqiyah Governorate

Sur: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has completed the execution of the breakwaters rehabilitation project in the Niyabat of Tiwi in the Wilayat of Sur, South A’Sharqiyah Governorate.

This project enhances the readiness of the infrastructure for the fisheries sector and supports the safety and sustainability of maritime activities.

Eng. Abdulnoor Issa Al Balushi, Director of the Breakwaters Rehabilitation Project in the Niyabat of Tiwi, told Oman News Agency (ONA) that the completion rate of the project has reached 100 percent, at a cost of approximately OMR2.9 million.

He pointed out that the project aims to protect the coastline from the impact of strong waves and tidal phenomena, alongside upgrading the efficiency of the infrastructure for fishing and maritime mooring facilities.

He added that the rehabilitation works included protecting the breakwaters and improving maritime navigation, thereby enhancing the safety of fishermen and supporting the sustainability of marine resources. He noted that the project comes within the efforts of the Sultanate of Oman to develop the infrastructure of the fisheries sector and raise the efficiency of ports and coastal harbors across various governorates.

He explained that the project is considered one of the vital projects that contribute to supporting the fisheries sector and promoting sustainable development in coastal communities by providing a safe environment for fishermen and facilitating the entry and exit of fishing boats.

Al Balushi pointed out that the project contributes to enhancing fisheries production and stimulating economic activity in the region by supporting activities associated with the fisheries sector and expanding investment horizons that serve members of the local community, in addition to providing greater protection for boats and marine equipment during various climatic conditions.

He mentioned that the project's location in the Niyabat of Tiwi grants it strategic importance, given the intense maritime activity and continuous fishing operations that the area represents, which enhances its role in serving fishermen and coastal communities, and achieving sustainable economic, social, and environmental returns.
